the name of the game

「ゲームの名前」という表現はアメリカで1960年代初めに生まれ、1970年代にイギリスでよく使われました。

漠然と意味なく使われる表現の一つですが、本来は「肝心な点」「要点」「本質」「主目的」といったことを指します。

People say that in politics the name of the game is making the right friends.

new broom

「新品のほうき」とは「改革に熱心な新任者」のことです。

A new broom sweeps clean.（新品のほうきはきれいに掃ける；新任者は改革に熱心なものだ）ということわざからきています。

The new broom was supposed to improve the way the department is managed, but things have been worse than ever since she arrived.

a new lease on/of life

「人生の新たな貸借期間」とは、借地・借家契約の更新に想を得た表現で、「寿命が延びること」「活力や元気、生きる望みなどを取り戻すこと」を指して用いられます。

The project suddenly got a new lease of life when the developers agreed to provide some more funding.

His grandchildren have given him a new lease of life.

nip in the bud

「つぼみのうちに摘み取る」とは、園芸で、植物の開花をわざと妨げたり、早霜によってつぼみが枯れぬように手を打ったりすることから、「未然に防ぐ」ことを表わします。

Many serious illnesses can be nipped in the bud if they are detected early enough.

be out of the woods

「森の中から出ている」とは「危険や困難を脱している」ことで、否定文で用いられるのがふつうです。

森や林を危険と結びつける発想は古代ローマまでさかのぼるそうです。

Financially, things are looking distinctly more hopeful, but we're not out of the woods yet.
