the 〜

the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the Gate（ロンドンの映画館）, the Royal Opera Houseなど

*「ロイヤル・オペラハウス」は愛称でCovent Gardenともいいますが、そのときは無冠詞になります。

* 人名を冠したものは無冠詞です。

Sadler's Wells Theatre, Carnegie Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hallなど

寺院・僧院の名前

無冠詞

St. Patrick's Cathedral, Westminster Abbeyなど

* the Dominican Abbeyのように、宗教団体に由来するものはtheがつきます。

大学の名前

一般的に無冠詞

California States University, Harvard University, Oxford University, Yale Universityなど

the 〜（「University of 〜」という形のもの）

the University of British Columbia, the University of California at Berkley, the University of Washingtonなど

* 省略形は無冠詞になります。

the University of California at Los Angeles → UCLA

*「Institute of 〜」という形もtheをつけるものが多いようです。

the Massachusetts Institute of Technology（＝ MIT）

*「the University of 〜」と「〜 University」の両方の形をもつ大学も少なくありません（その場合「the University of 〜」の方が正式の呼称になります）。
