the best/greatest thing since sliced bread

「スライス食パン以来のすぐれもの」

20世紀中ごろ、スライス食パンが初めて売り出され、手間のかからない重宝な食品としてもてはやされたことから、an excellent person or thingを指します。

皮肉をこめて使われることも多いようです。

Portable phones are marketed as the best thing since sliced bread, but to me they're just another expensive gadget.

grist to the mill/grist for one's mill

「製粉所への穀物」

gristは「製粉用の穀物」のことで、これが粉引きの作業によって利益の元になることから、「利益をもたらすもの」「役に立つもの」を表わします。

I might as well learn another language; it's all grist to the mill when it comes to getting a job.

have a lot on one's plate

「皿にたくさん載っている」

食べるのにとても時間がかかりそうなくらい、たくさん料理が盛られた皿のイメージから、「やるべきことが山ほどある」ことを表します。

たいていは仕事に関して使われます。

She's got a lot on her plate - especially with two new projects starting this week.

in a nutshell

「ナッツの殻に」

ナッツ類の殻が小さくて、少ししか中身が入らないことから、「簡単に言えば、要するに」という意味で使われます。

Well, to put it in a nutshell, we're going to have to start again.

jam tomorrow

「明日のジャム」

比喩的に「いつも約束だけに終わる明日の楽しみ」を指します。

この表現の由来は、ルイス・キャロル「鏡の中のアリス」の中の"The rule is, jam tomorrow and jam yesterday―but never jam today."というせりふです。

Nobody will accept a pay cut, and it's not enough to promise jam tomorrow.

know which side one's bread is buttered

「自分のパンのどちらの面にバターが塗ってあるのか知っている」

比喩的に「自分の利害関係にさとい」ことを表わします。

He won't refuse to come with us. He knows which side his bread is buttered.
